The Top 5 Designer Wallpaper Trends for 2021

It’s that time of year again where we look forward to the top wallpaper trends of 2021! 2020 has been truly memorable, whether it’s the rise of watercolor wallpaper as a major style category or the increasing use of wallpaper murals within the home. Even our own Walls Republic site got a new look itself! In building our list of 2021 wallpaper trends, we’re looking at how wallpaper functions within the space not only as wall décor products that add a sense of style to the room, but as functional products. 2019’s wallpaper trends are about this transformative aspect that plain paint can’t hope to match. Without any further adieu, let’s dive right in with our top 5 designer wallpaper trends for 2019!

5. Wallpapers With A Flatter Design

In 2018, we saw a lot of wallpaper designs with a 3D effect, which adds a sense of depth to the walls. The illusionary effect is one that works perfectly with smaller rooms, as it creates the feeling that the walls are further away than they actually are. However, we think there’s going to be a shift. Our first 2019 wallpaper trend is the increasing popularity of using wallpaper patterns with a flatter design. The flat or “pressed” look of the design gives a totally different look than 3D designs. Wallpaper with “flatter” patterns have a more stylized look that’s contemporary and more playful. Flat designs have less emphasis of lighting effects and shadows and more focus on color, lines, and the imagery itself.

Graphic Trees above is one example of a floral wallpaper print with a flat look. Floral designs are generally rendered with more highlights and shadow to give the floral blossoms more detail and a sense of depth. However, a flatter floral look emphasizes its modern aesthetics, creating a much different look than traditional floral wallpaper. With geometric wallpaper such as Brown Fractured lines, the flat design gives it an aesthetic similar to a mosaic.

4. Vibrant, Bright Colors That Spark a Playful Look

Pantone’s color of the year for 2019, Living Coral, is just one example of how designers can use more vibrant or brighter colors to create a playful, lively atmosphere. Since colors each have their own emotional meaning and impact, using certain colors can create a more open look or one that’s more intimate and cozy. Brighter or lighter colors tend to do the former – it adds a welcoming look that emphasizes a lightness to the space.

You can use vibrant colors in a number of ways, either on its own or paired with darker colors. For example, Retro Vintage Circles uses a brighter blue and pink and balances this with a much darker navy blue and black. This helps keep the wallpaper colors from becoming too overwhelming or gaudy. Overlapping Tropical Leaves uses various shades of blue to create an appearance that’s simplistic yet still vibrant.

3. New and Exciting Ways To Use Wallpaper

Wallpaper isn’t just about using the product on your walls (at least, it’s not only about that). Our third 2019 wallpaper trend is the new and exciting ways designers and homeowners can use wallpaper. If you’ve been keeping up with our other articles, you’ll remember some of our guides on using wallpaper “off the walls,” so to speak. For example, in our article, Wallpaper Trends: Using Wallpaper on Your Ceiling, we talked about how you can actually use wallpaper and murals on your ceiling! While it may seem odd at first, it’s actually an excellent way to create a stunning, one-of-a-kind look that will get visitors talking.

Wallpaper murals are also going through a bit of a transformation as well. In our other article, Wallpaper Trends: Using Wallpaper Murals as Art, we talk about how you can frame wallpaper murals to create a work of art that you can hang up on your walls. Why would you want to do this in the first place? We’re not going to spoil it for you – you’ll just have to read the article! In short, it allows you to be in control of your space and how it looks. Lastly, our article, Off The Wall: Creative Ways to Use Wallpaper, shows you how to use wallpaper in smaller DIY projects around the house. Whether you’re using leftover rolls to wallpaper the back of a bookcase or using it on your stairs, wallpaper is more versatile than you think!

2. Geometric Wallpapers With Cleaner Lines

Geometric wallpaper is going through a bit of a renaissance at the moment, with funky retro-inspired designs (like the Retro Vintage Circles featured earlier), faux effects cross-overs, 3D effects, and much more. Our next 2019 wallpaper trend looks at geometric wallpapers as they go back to a more minimalist look. By emphasizing clean-cut lines, these geometric wallpaper designs not only emphasize a modern look but also a luxurious and sophisticated finish that’s classy as well.

Lines often dictate a sense of movement, and these geometric wallpaper examples offer that in spades. It’s a dynamic and bold look that’s subtle and versatile enough for any space, such as a living room, powder room, or bedroom. What’s great about these geometric wallpaper designs is that they’re quite flexible as well, which only adds to its timeless nature. These geometric prints won’t go out of style!

1. Artistic Abstract Wallpaper Murals

Last but definitely not least, our final pick for wallpaper trends in 2019 has got to be about wallpaper murals, one of the most innovative and transformative wall décor products. Installing a large-scale image in your home can dramatically change the room’s looks, and for 2019, we think more people will go with abstract mural imagery over any other category. It’s an easy-to-use design that plays nicely in both smaller rooms as well as larger ones. Because the imagery is non-distinct, it’s mostly about how different colors interact with each other to create a gorgeous, attention-grabbing aesthetic.

The two examples shown above serve to highlight the powerful look of wallpaper murals. With wallpaper murals, not only are you getting a wall décor product that’s been printed with rich colors, but also the high-quality, crisp details need to be talked about. Whether it’s the gradual shift in color or a curved line, wallpaper murals offer both unforgettable color palettes with images that have been rendered beautifully.

2019 Wallpaper Trends!

We’ve reached the end of our 2019 wallpaper trends list! Looking at each of the five we’ve highlighted, it’s easy to pick up some common ground between them. Wallpaper is about creating a specific look and feel for your space, whether you’re going with lively colors on a wallpaper mural or a high-end contemporary look with geometric prints. Wallpaper is not only transformative, but it’s proving to be even more versatile than we thought!
