Introduction
In the case of wall murals, paneling and size are the most important procedures towards a smooth and professional installation. The final effect can be destroyed by a mural which is too small, too big, or badly paneled. The good news: when you come with the correct measurements and planning, one can measure once, install once and end up with a wall mural transformation. It is a step-by-step instructional guide on measuring your wall, learning how to figure out the width of the panel and calculating mural panels easily using our wall mural sizing calculator. You will also learn strategies on seam, layout planning, and frequently asked questions so that you cannot attend to common mistakes.
1. How to Measure a Wall for a Mural
A perfect mural install is based on accurate measurement. Here's how to do it:
- Empty furniture and fixtures off the wall.
- Determine the width at three positions; top, middle, and bottom. Record the largest.
- Take the measurement of height at three places- left, center and right. Record the largest.
- Measure baseboards and ceilings - always measure at finished edges (floor or baseboard, and ceiling or crown molding).
- Extra margin - it is always advisable to add 2-3 inches to the width and the height so that it can be cut to fit into place.
Tip: Marking should always be done with the plumb line or level so that it is perfectly vertical.
2. Seam Strategies/wall Mural paneling
The majority of the wall murals are placed in vertical panels, which run side-by-side. The right understanding of panel widths and seams prevents clumsy partings.
- Normal panel widths: 24-36 inches (60-90 cm). [change this if wrong]
- Overlap vs. butt seam: There are those in which the crossing over of the two seams is necessary; some of the murals have butt-join seam.
- Preventing focal disruptions: There should never be a seam that runs through a focal point (e.g. face, logo, key pattern, etc).
Seam Strategy Checklist:
- Place plans in areas that are not near windows, doors and outlets.
- Position the mural pattern at the middle of the wall and evenly apportion the seams.
- In case of patterned murals, panels should be aligned properly to make the pattern flow.

3. Panel Count Calculator & Examples
Use our Wall Mural Sizing Calculator to determine the number of panels required:
The Formula: Panel Count = Wall Width ÷ Panel Width (rounded up)
Example 1: Small Wall
- Wall width: 120 inches
- Panel width: 30 inches
- Panel count = 120 ÷ 30 = 4 panels
Example 2: Large Feature Wall
- Wall width: 220 inches
- Panel width: 36 inches
- Panel count = 220 ÷ 36 = 6.1 → 7 panels (rounded up)

4. Layout & Cropping Considerations
Murals tend to be wider than the wall so as to be adaptable. Here's how to plan your layout:
- Centering the design: The center of focal points should be on the center of the wall
- Removing edges: Edges to be expected to be trimmed at the left, right and at the top and bottom.
- Patterns of balance: Don’t trim too much from one side.

5. Special Cases
Additional planning of some walls is required:
- Non-rectangular walls: Measure the tallest and widest point, and cut off the extra ones post-installation.
- Horizontal paneling: This is uncommon, but applied in panoramic views.
- The entire wall should be measured around windows/doors, not only the space that is open.
- Seam through focal point: This should always be avoided by changing design or changing the focus point.

FAQs: Wall Mural Sizing & Paneling
Q1: Do I measure to the floor or baseboard?

Q3: Is it possible to install murals using horizontal panels?
A: Yes, provided it is only with some panoramic designs. Majority of the murals make use of vertical panels.
Q4: How can I prevent seams with the help of focal points?
A: Select and position calculator to lay out seam in areas that are less apparent.
Q5: What panel width should I assume if not specified?
A: 24-36 inch panels are mostly used in making the murals; always check with supplier.
