Custom Hospitality Wallcovering for MotorCity Casino Hotel

Custom Hospitality Wallcovering for MotorCity Casino Hotel

How Walls Republic helped Gensler create a consistent custom headboard finish across multiple guestroom configurations in Detroit.

Project Overview

For the guestroom program at MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit, Gensler needed a wallcovering that could support a unified design across multiple headboard configurations while meeting the performance expectations of a commercial hospitality environment.

Walls Republic developed and manufactured the custom wallcovering used throughout the program, supplying more than 1,800 linear yards in a consistent color and finish.

The material was used across King, Queen-Queen, and K1 headboard configurations.

The Challenge

One Design Across Multiple Guestroom Configurations

The headboard design needed to feel consistent from room to room, even though the size and configuration of the headboards changed.

At the same time, the material had to be appropriate for a high-turnover hospitality environment where surfaces are exposed to frequent use and cleaning.

The project required a solution that could deliver:

  • Consistent color and finish across multiple headboard profiles.
  • A custom design adapted to the project rather than a standard off-the-shelf pattern.
  • Commercial-grade performance suitable for hospitality use.
  • Material that met the project's required fire-performance specifications.

The Solution

A Custom Wallcovering Made to One Standard

Instead of asking the design team to adapt its concept to an existing product, Walls Republic manufactured the wallcovering specifically for the project.

Producing the material in-house allowed one color, pattern, and finish standard to be maintained across the full guestroom program.

The headboards were then fabricated and upholstered by the project's trade partner using the Walls Republic material.

This gave the fabrication team one consistent material source across all three headboard configurations.

A Design That Works Across Every Headboard

The custom pattern uses overlapping circular forms in warm greige and silvered taupe tones, with a subtle metallic warmth.

Its neutral palette gives the guestrooms a refined backdrop while the pattern adds enough movement and detail to create a distinct headboard feature.

Most importantly, the visual character remains consistent whether the material is applied to a King, Queen-Queen, or K1 configuration.

Queen-Queen Configuration

The custom wallcovering scales across the wider Queen-Queen headboard while maintaining the same color, finish, and visual language used throughout the project.

King Configuration

The King headboard uses the same material specification, allowing rooms with different layouts to remain part of one coordinated guestroom design.

Built for Hospitality Performance

Appearance was only part of the specification.

The wallcovering was produced within Walls Republic's commercial Type I and Type II offering and specified for the performance requirements of a hospitality environment.

By combining custom manufacturing with commercial-grade material capabilities, the project did not have to choose between design consistency and practical performance.

What Walls Republic Delivered

Design consistency
One coordinated color and finish across King, Queen-Queen, and K1 headboards.

Custom manufacturing
Wallcovering produced specifically for the requirements of the guestroom program.

Commercial performance
Material selected for the demands of a high-use hospitality environment and the project's required fire-performance criteria.

Single-source production
In-house manufacturing helped maintain consistency across more than 1,800 linear yards of material.

The result

A consistent guestroom identity without losing the character of the design

The completed headboard program carries the same design language across different guestroom configurations.

Guests moving from one room type to another see a consistent finish and visual identity, while the design team retains the flexibility required for different headboard dimensions.

For Gensler and the project team, the result is a custom material solution that supports the design rather than forcing the design to work around a standard product.

For Walls Republic, the project demonstrates how in-house wallcovering manufacturing can help designers maintain consistency across large-scale hospitality programs.
