This month's trade partner's spotlight is Tai Colon of Three Humming Birds Design.
Walls Republic chose her to be this month's spotlight because her adaptability in innovation is the same as the hummingbird itself. The vibrancy, and the creature’s know ability in being adaptable and the joy it brings is indeed very similar to Tai Colon’s designs as seen on her projects.
She has been a trade partner for a year now, (2023) and we have never seen such enthusiasm and flair in her designs just like what she has. Tai has cultivated a unique perspective that celebrates individuality and personal storytelling through decor. Her design philosophy always reflects her client’s personality, making them both satisfied and happy. That’s how they grew their customer base fast, and they have built trust amongst their clients.
According to Tai "We chose Walls Republic for our wallpaper needs due to their extensive selection of high-quality designs, which allows us to offer clients truly unique and personalized spaces. Their diverse range of patterns and textures aligns perfectly with our commitment to creating memorable, client-focused interiors. Additionally, their exceptional customer service and support have been invaluable in ensuring smooth project execution from start to finish."
"My inspiration comes from many places—travel, art, and even my own cultural roots. Growing up in New York with Dominican heritage, I’m drawn to a mix of vibrant colors, bold textures, and refined urban aesthetics. Nature is also a big influence, as it offers endless palettes and textures that inspire my work. Ultimately, each client's story fuels my creative vision, as I love weaving their personal touches into every project."
Can you share a design trend you're currently excited about?
"I'm particularly excited about the resurgence of rich, dark color palettes in interior design. Deep hues like emerald green, navy blue, and charcoal are making a strong comeback, adding depth and sophistication to spaces. These colors create a cozy, intimate atmosphere, especially when paired with contrasting textures and materials."
What role do colors play in your design process?
"Colors are fundamental to my design process; they set the tone and mood of a space. I carefully select color schemes that align with the client's vision and the function of the room. For instance, warm tones can make a space feel inviting, while cooler hues can evoke calmness. Understanding color psychology allows me to create environments that not only look appealing but also feel harmonious and balanced."
How do you balance functionality and aesthetics in your designs?
"Balancing functionality and aesthetics is essential in my work. I start by understanding the client's practical needs and how they intend to use the space. From there, I incorporate design elements that fulfill these requirements without compromising on style. For example, selecting furniture that offers both comfort and visual appeal, or choosing materials that are both durable and beautiful, ensures that the space is both livable and inspiring."
What’s your favorite room to design, and why?
"My favorite room to design is the entryway because it sets the tone for the entire home. It’s the first impression, and I love creating spaces that immediately reflect the client’s personality and style. Entryways offer an exciting challenge—they often have limited space but need to make a big impact. From selecting statement lighting to incorporating textures and colors, I enjoy layering elements that welcome guests and hint at what’s to come in the rest of the home."
Describe a project that was particularly rewarding for you.
"One of my most rewarding projects was a kitchen renovation for a client who initially redesigned the space independently but felt it didn’t fully come together. Working closely with them, we transformed the space, enhancing both its aesthetics and functionality. The client’s excitement as they saw their vision truly come to life was incredibly fulfilling. Seeing them fall in love with their kitchen all over again reminded me of why I do what I do."
How do you incorporate sustainability into your designs?
"I prioritize quality, timeless pieces over quick trends, which helps reduce the need for frequent replacements. I also source materials and finishes that are durable and responsibly produced when possible. Sustainability is about creating spaces that not only look beautiful but also stand the test of time, so I work to ensure each design remains functional and relevant for years to come. Small choices, like using energy-efficient lighting and low-VOC paints, also contribute to eco-friendly designs."
Can you share a design tip that everyone can use in their homes?
"One simple design tip is to layer textures to add warmth and depth to any room. Combining different textures—like a soft throw on a leather couch, woven baskets, or a jute rug—creates a rich, inviting atmosphere. It’s a quick way to elevate the look without overwhelming the space, and it adds that cozy, lived-in feel."
What’s the most important aspect of creating a cohesive design?
"The key to a cohesive design is consistency in color palette and style. By choosing a limited color scheme and repeating those colors and patterns in different forms, you create flow throughout the space. Even in rooms with different functions, a unifying theme in colors or textures helps tie everything together, making the home feel connected and harmonious."
Do you have a signature element that you often incorporate into your designs?
"I love incorporating statement pieces that reflect the client’s personality—whether it’s a bold piece of art, a custom piece of furniture, or unique wallpaper. These elements serve as focal points and add character to the space. I also have a penchant for integrating natural elements, like wood or stone, to create a grounded, organic feel. It’s all about adding those memorable touches that make the space uniquely theirs."
How do you stay up-to-date with the latest interior design trends?
"I stay up-to-date with trends by attending industry trade shows, following design publications, and connecting with other professionals in the field. Social media is also a great tool for discovering emerging trends and seeing how they’re interpreted globally. Ultimately, though, I’m careful to adapt trends in a way that aligns with my client’s vision and the timelessness I aim to achieve in each design."
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received as an interior designer?
"The best advice I’ve received is to truly listen to clients. As designers, we may have a vision, but it’s crucial to remember that we’re creating spaces for someone else’s life. By focusing on their needs and preferences, I can bring my expertise to guide decisions and create a space they’ll genuinely love. It’s about collaboration and making sure the client feels heard throughout the process."
